In this opinion, we argue that law firms should reconsider their role in representing companies that contribute to climate change. It calls for a more ethical approach in which lawyers are aware of the environmental and human rights implications of their advice. The article emphasizes that the current practice of “ethical minimalism” may violate the oath that lawyers take. It points to international guidelines that call on companies, including law firms, not to engage in behavior that results in human rights violations. Finally, it calls for more action by law firms and the Dutch Bar Association to meet ethical standards in the context of climate change. Is it still legally and ethically appropriate to assist companies that oppose the climate transition? This is a question the legal profession can no longer ignore.
