Marieke assists companies in navigating legal challenges related to sustainability and climate change. She advises on the ever-changing legislative landscape and relevant best practices. She helps organizations integrate climate and sustainability goals into business strategy (including climate transition trajectories), balance business interests and helps align plan, practice and publication. Marieke regularly speaks and publishes on these topics.
In addition to her work at New Paradigm, Marieke is part of the Blikverruimers-academy, a trainee program for the supervisory directors of the future.
Background
Before starting New Paradigm, Marieke was a lawyer at the Zuidas for over ten years. In her more than eight years at NautaDutilh, her practice focused on international corporate and commercial litigation, as well as supporting companies and financial institutions with legal and strategic challenges in the areas of climate and sustainability.
Between 2020 and 2022, she was based in NautaDutilh’s New York office, where she focused on building the international climate and sustainability practice. In 2019, Marieke was seconded to Cravath, a leading New York law firm. From 2015 to 2017, she was a board member of the Amsterdam Young Bar Association.
Marieke was part of the pro-bono team that supported the Urgenda Foundation in their landmark lawsuit against the Dutch State, in which the State was ordered to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 25% (compared to 1990) by the end of 2020.
In 2020, Marieke was awarded the one-time Resilience Award at the Golden Zandloper Awards for setting up a platform for free legal support to SMEs during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Marieke received her LL.B (hons.) and LL.M from the University of Utrecht. She also obtained a Masters in Management from London Business School.
